Autumn is in full swing here at CISS, and winter seems to be closing in. The days are growing colder and shorter all the time. But it seems like it was just a short time ago that students were enjoying classes outside in the warm sunshine of September.
In the second week of school, during some particularly warm and sunny weather, the MYP art students had several lessons outdoors where they engaged in very colourful hands-on fun. The students were given a few simple instructions to mix bubbles with paints to Introduce themselves to colour theory.
The students were given freedom to experiment as they wanted to, and each lesson took a completely different direction from the last. Some students chose to experiment with the colors themselves, some played with diffusion and dilution, others manipulated the texture of their paints. Some students chose to use paintbrushes, while others were not afraid to get their hands dirty.
Students were truly inquirers as they experimented with new materials and techniques. Some students discovered what would be later taught in proper lessons, such as neutralizing tones, and the theory of complementary colors. Students demonstrated open mindedness as they approach this activity eagerly and openly discussed their observations during the lesson.
The most powerful tool a teacher has is a student’s curiosity. As IB World School teachers, we strive to present opportunities for the students to care and inquire about the challenges they will face. In this way, students will take personal responsibility for their own learning, and more importantly, will remember their learnings for years to come.
