3D Design – Fall ECA

By Morgan Dugdale.

Starting mid-way through September, the teachers of CISS volunteered to offer extra-curricular classes to students after class time. I decided to focus on a subject that I am very interested in, 3D art and design. Throughout my own career as an artist and designer, I’ve designed and sold 3-dimensional products and artworks in a variety of mediums. Planning out, sketching and designing products in 3D takes critical thinking and an excellent understanding of volume, mass, proportions, and the limitations of the mediums used.

When designing plush or fabric products, designers need to consider individual surfaces of an object. When working with earth clay or polymer clay, designers need to be aware of volume and mass. When digitally designing products for 3D printers, designers need an excellent understanding of space and foundational strength, as well as many mathematical elements.

In my 3D Design ECA, students will be given the skills and knowledge to design their own original products. They will work from their own interests and design their own products from start to finish. We will use the same process that the students learned in the design class, enhancing their academic understanding of the design cycle. I look forward to giving students the tools they need to pursue designing, critical thinking and creativity in their own lives.
