The Chess Club gains momentum.

The chess club has proved to be very popular amongst our students. As the students have become familiar with the moves of each piece, their thoughts are turning towards strategies for beating their opponents. For some of the more advanced students, it is no longer a game of trying to whittle down your opponent, piece by piece. For them, an early castling move, bringing many pieces into play as soon as possible and keeping the endgame in mind are all part of their developing mindsets! It has been a great joy to see our students becoming disciples of this, the greatest game of strategy. The best is that a few have even beaten me!

Counterpointing the fierce rivalry that happens in games, the students are also taking an interest in their fellow students’ progress. Last week, some of the better Grade 6 and 7 players went to the Junior Chess Club to help teach the Grade 1 and 2 students how to play the game. As they learn to give of their time to others, these students are also learning the rewards of doing something that is appreciated.

It is our hope that our students will continue to enjoy playing, to further develop their skills and that this game may become a lifelong passion for them!
